After the Halloween Candy

If you are a person who struggles with your sweet tooth, (as I am), then the holidays can be a challenging time. I believe in moderation and I don't believe in denial, so I treat this as a sugar addiction very successfully in my acupuncture practice. My patients typically tell me I had JUST ONE piece of cake or I was able to shop in the bakery section in the grocery store and I didn't want it!!

I hope you had a blast with Halloween and indulged a little! But now that it's over it is time to be tough. Give away the leftovers, or even better yet, throw them away and take the trash out. It makes a really big imprint in your mind. This stuff is garbage. It has no nutrition for my body and mind.

Your body craves sweets when it is not getting REAL nutrition, so feed your body sweet potatoes, squash, veggies, and rice. Move into warmer foods for fall and winter, like stews, roasts, baked potatoes, etc. If you love salads, warm them up with roasted potatoes, leftover rice, blanched broccoli, seeds and nuts, and a heavier salad dressing.

Now that you've learned more about what it means to crave sweets; You'll want to come in and see me for your free consultation! Call Tina Laue, L.Ac. at 303-881-1971 or e-mail me at tinalaue@goodneedles.com.

  1. Hi Tina!

Great blog site! I am out of herbs and need a refill and definately want to come and get poked to get rid of my sweet tooth! I ate about a pound of Twix bars when I was in Vegas last week! Ugh!

  2. Just giving up sugar, in any form (no aspartame for me), dairy (except butter occasionally), and gluten (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, triticale), has been quite a journey this past year. I've lost 30# and am 122#, the lightest I've been in years. At 54 yrs of age, w/two teens, and going through menopause, I've never felt better. Walking 3 miles a day 4-5 days a week, and doing yoga, zhumba, and working out w/weights, has given me the best shape in years. You don't need a fancy diet or restrictive weight loss plan, which is just temporary anyway. There are no gimmicks to this way of eating and life, and the benefits are many.

  3. MaryClare:
Thanks for your comment. Congratulations on all the hard work you have been doing on your diet and exercise. You are right. There truly are no gimmicks and the results of seeing yourself at a healthy weight speak for themselves. Too often we reject the high road and increase our stress searching for a miracle.

For anyone else out there trying to do what MaryClare has done, I cannot recommend acupuncture enough. If you are struggling with these changes, your acupuncturist is part coach, part cheerleader and also has the skills to use herbs and acupuncture points to help make you NOT DESIRE the junk. A desire for food in abundance is a signal that something is not working for you in your life. Either your diet is poor, or emotionally you are upset about something. Often we eat to try to fill a hole in our lives. It doesn't work, except to cause a spiral of shame, guilt and depression that only leads to more eating and weight gain.
